Cousin Memories - Taken from Wilda's Personal History

Wilda’s Cousins:
Kay-Irene-Edith-Edna-Elenor-Dorthea Millward

After supper Wilda along with her cousins would have to get their lessons done, whether it was reading, arithmetic or
geography. Edna and Wilda (were the same age) joined the 4-H cooking club. They each had to can five pint bottles of fruits and vegetables. They would win first and second place ribbons on each bottle entered! With her cousins, they would make a ball diamond in the pasture and all the boys and girls in Bitter Creek would come for a ball game! Afternoons in the summertime they would walk down to Fairview and swim in “Big Hole”! They would have bonfires and candy pulls.

One fun experience Wilda had with Edna was going camping with the older girls in Bitter Creek! Alice Barrus took them and a few other girls in a little buggy up Cottonwood Lake. It stormed all night. They didn’t have a tent so they had to take their bed rolls and sleep in the girl’s restroom!

Wilda and Edna were taught to be great Sunday School teachers by observing the way her Aunt Mary would give the lesson and then find an exciting story with a good moral to tell. Mary decided it would be good for Wilda and Edna to tell the story – so every other Sunday Wilda got to tell the story and learned the more real you could make it the better the class was. This was where Wilda began to have a love for teaching the gospel to the little ones.

The man Wilda would fall in love with and marry actually started out by dating her cousin Edna! Her uncle Lyle was
teasing Wilda and Edna and said, “Now when Melvin comes to the door tonight the one that answers the door will get
to go with him!” Edna had a date that night so Wilda got to answer the door and sure enough Melvin asked her out!

Cousin Memories - Tawnya Olson Harrison

My cousin memory:

My earliest cousin memory would have to be LONG Sunday drives to Brigham City @ 55 MPH to visit Larry and Myrna’s family. I loved seeing Laura and Lisa and the chats we would have in the basement. There was always a homemade treat too! It is hard to believe now having to drive to Star Valley to see them, or Provo to visit.

My recent memories are that awesome time visiting with Gina and Janae at the football game, and I will never forget standing against the fence the entire whole Las Vegas bowl game with Sandee.

Michael Mel had come and stayed with our family while his parents were out of town. We had gone with my mom up town to take Tawnya to her organ lessons. While we were waiting for her, Mike found an injured bird and wanted to take it home so bad!

Cousin Memories

I remember when Kristen came to Logan and stayed at our apartment while I was attending college for the weekend checking things out at USU.

Tresa came to Midvale with her team to play the Huskies when I was on the volleyball team at Hillcrest and she was on the team at Mountain View!

I was able to see Sandee at the MTC while I was there when I went to get copies. It was so fun to see her!

I appreciated Gina playing the piano at my wedding reception!

Recently as we made the move to southern Utah, we ended up in the same ward as Kristen and her family. It has been fun to get to know them and play with them. I have run into David Ord’s family a few times at Target here as well. We’ve been able to have dinner with Kristen, Chad, and David’s family here in Southern Utah!

Cousin Memory:
The fun reunions at Star Valley. People slept on the floor, lawn, a
camper, and beds. Grandpa Olson came home from work late and didn't have a place to sleep because Grandma had already given up their bed to one of their children so he would find someone he could share a bed with (it was probably a twin bed) and called it a " bed pal," Playing lawn game relays on Grandpa and Grandma's lawn, riding Smokey Pal, watching Grandpa ride smokey pal was so fun! The fair and rodeo were fun. I loved Grandma's waffles, sitting by the heater in their kitchen, and watching cartoons with their rabbit ears TV. I remember the candy jar with pink mints and licorice and the cookie jar with spiced raision cookies and the pretty dolls in the living room.
Talent shows at every gathering, fun get togethers after
BYU football games at Denices. She made the best rice krispie bars. We had fun playing football, lawn games, and swinging on the swings in the park by her house.I remember tons of Christmas parties with present swaps and loved to see how meaningful it was to see Grandpa bask in each moment of his family being together. Cousin Memories - Melissa Olson Gibson

One of the cousin memories I have is when we used to go to different aunts and uncles houses for the Christmas party. We would all be crowded in there and then Grandma Olson would tell her story about The Last Straw. I remember being so enthralled when she would tell her story.
She always had a special way about her when she told stories. I have always loved that story and the memories that it now has for me. We would exchange presents and just be together as a family. It always brought such good feelings and was a great memory of Christmas.

My memory:

I remember going to Wyoming every year as a young child to Grandma and Grandpa's perfect, small, and inviting white house. It was a tradition. All the cousins would chase each other around the house, up and down the narrow stairway.

One of my most fun memories with the cousins is going to Aunt Deniece's house after the football games, eating dinner and then playing games in the big park by their old house. Tresa Olson

Charlie came in for a week with the family. We were going and going all week and it was a lot of fun! Charlie's girlfriend, Tam, came in for the weekend. Tam is a really good cook, we all ate like kings while she was here! It was a lot of fun seeing them and we can't wait until they come back again!

One day I was teasing the girls that they had to "write an essay" before diving into all the good foods I had brought from the store. Zoie (age 9) took me seriously and wrote an essay so she could have permission to have a scoop of ice cream. I thought it was cute and wanted to share.

ICE CREAM

Ice cream is one of my favorite things in the world. I know it is unhealthy, but everyone needs to have unhealthy things in life. Ice cream is yummy, creamy, soft, good tasting, delicious, and it is even famous for being yummy. There can be chocolate, strawberry, mint chip, Reese's, and many more! There are so many flavors of ice cream. I could even eat them all!

I know I don't deserve ice cream because I didn't go to school today. But it was for an important reason. I have a very sore throat! Ice cream helps sore throats because of the creaminess, it's one of the only things in the world that doesn't hurt when you swallow. I love ice cream, but not as much as I love you.

I have been trying to think of cousin memories for a while and have had a hard time coming up with something worth saying. I wasn't one of the older cousins that were around when Grandma was alive. I didn't think that I had anything interesting to share and then I started thinking about Grandpa and what a great person he is to me. Grandpa always talked about wanting to be with Grandma ever since I could remember but it wasn't until he finally got to be with Grandma that I realized how much he meant to me in my life! He was always there, for everything. He went to my softball games, award ceremonies, baptism, anything that was big in my life, but he was also there for all the small things too. I remember going to his ward in Orem and was amazed at how many people knew and loved my Grandpa. The women at Great Harvest Bread would always say how great our Grandpa was because he was the friendliest person they had ever met (he's always ride his bike down there and say hi to them). I just know that he showed me such an example of how to be friendly and love the people that were around me. I remember his funeral in Orem and in Starr Valley and all the people that were there and how hard it was for our family to say 'goodbye' to him. I am so thankful for the Olson family, because I have learned so much from being around people like you. Even though I wish I knew a lot of you better then I do, I know there is still time to get to know you and I am so thankful for this blog and the chance we have to get to know each other through different means!

Cousin Memories
Some of my fondest memories involve my cousins. So I appreciate the chance to sit down and write some of them down. When I was younger, I loved having our “Olson Reunions.” I remember going up to Aunt Deniece’s. We would go to their park, or just play in their fun yard. There would be a bunch of different games going on and you could pick what you wanted to do. It was great playing and interacting with all the cousins.

I always admired my older cousins, they seemed to have it all together. What I love about our family is that there is so much support. We would go to baby blessings, baptisms, homecomings, and farewells, and eventually weddings, and all of you did that for us as well. It was great to feel so much love and support from such a large family of aunts uncles, and cousins. I remember being asked to help serve at Tawnya’s wedding. I don’t know how much help I actually was, but it was great to feel so included, and great to be a part of a wedding like that. I think that was one of the first times that I helped at a wedding, and I felt so grown up being a part of that.

Football played and still plays such a part in memories with my cousins. I remember going to the games when I was young, and now, how fun it is to take my children to the games. I love how we will go to the games, talk with all the family, and then go to Aunt Denieces again to have great food and talk some more. It is great that something like that, that all the Olson’s feel so passionately about, can bring us closer as a family.

One thing that I really appreciate about our family is the consistency that we have our reunions, so we can stay up on everyone’s lives. I cannot remember a time when we did not have our Summer Reunion, and our Christmas Party. I think that is so great to have a tradition, that everyone can count on. It is amazing how time flies, the younger kids used to be my younger brothers and sisters. Now these reunions are filled with kids, the great grandkids of Grandma and Grandpa Olson. Sometimes I think about how much they would have liked to have seen us. They would have loved to have seen how our family, and our children have grown. Then I remember that they can see us, and are watching over us, and I know they are very happy about the tradition of these reunions.

1.Rolling around inside and on-top of the big yellow barrel at Grandma and Grandpa Olson’s house in Star Valley when we were small.
2. Making homemade chocolate chip ice cream in Star Valley with Grandma and Grandpa Olson and cousins, and being too full to eat my bowl of ice cream after licking the ice cream maker paddles.
3. Sitting together at the BYU football games! Go Cougars!
4. Playing football at Uncle Bud’s Park (next to our house) after BYU football games.
5. Having Uncle Donnie and some of his kids come early and stay late at our house after the football games to let the traffic die down before heading home, and for them in the Cougar Marching Band.
6.Bringing our favorite Christmas toy with us driving to the Olson Christmas family reunion when they use to be held on Christmas day at each Uncle or Aunt’s home when we were small.
7. Attending each other’s baptisms.
8. Attending each other’s weddings, temple sealings, and wedding receptions, and getting to know our new “cousin-in-laws.”
9. Praying for the cousin missionaries by name every day they served, looking forward to the day we’d get to attend their Welcome Home and I’d be able to serve a mission myself.
10. Playing a song at the Cousin Piano Recital Uncle Donnie and Aunt Cindy helped coordinate in Midvale.
11. Playing games of H-O-R-S-E, speed and basketball in our drive-way, Laron & Darlene’s drive-way, and the church cultural halls.
12. Taking piano lessons from Kevin and Ryan for a short time after our piano teacher passed away.
13. Watching Nick play a JV football game when West Jordan came down to play Timpview one year.
14. Mindy, Candace, Ginny & Madison coming to our house to play with Marilyn, Stephen & LeAnn during the summers, and taking swimming lessons with us at the Provo Recreation Center.
15. Hiking the “Y” with Kristen & Melissa in the rain.
16. Having Chad & Janae live in Marilyn & Kirk’s basement, and watching their “Cul-de-sac of Fire” during the 4th of July in 2008. Stephen gave us a firework reenactment of the Battle of the Bismarck, complete with a cardboard cut-out of the ship and firework tanks!
17. Having cousins over to watch the Stadium of Fire fireworks from our deck, complete with a table full of cookies, caramel popcorn, and my mom’s chocolate covered Rice Krispie treats.
18. Playing bladder-ball (volleyball with the blown-up inside of a basketball) at the reunions in Brigham City.
19. Sandee Olson & Uncle Lynn singing “Hair of Silver, Heart of Gold” at Grandma Olson’s funeral.
20. Getting to stand in the circle when Madison was blessed (it being one of the first baby blessings I got to participate in).

Most of these pictures are taken by the wonderful Lynn Olson. He is always taking pictures but a lot of them are not the most flattering pictures. Sorry if I posted a picture of you that you don't like, but thought that these were really cute!

Larons family did such a good job with the reunion, everyone had something to do. All the kids loved the games! There was a lot of time and effort put into the reunion and we all just want to say thanks to those guys for everything they did to make the reunion great! Thanks guys!!!

Cousin Memories - LeeAnn Ord McMahan

Cousin Memories I remember how we always looked forward to the Olson get-togethers and how there was always some type of basketball game going on during them. I also remember cleaning up the kitchen at Mel's church after a reunion.

I remember loving to go to Mel's house where a bunch of us cousins would get to jump on his trampoline and play in his backyard.

I remember taking piano lessons from Kevin and Ryan. I remember thinking how neat it was to have a cousin who had their song published in the New Era (Kevin's mission song- and I'm sure many others, but I especially remember the mission song.)

I remember countless hours of fun with Candace and Ginny coloring, taking swimming lessons, jumping on their trampoline and just being together.

I remember the drives to and from Brigham City for reunions there (the night of one of our reunions in Brigham City is the night Scott surprised me by being in Provo and we got engaged.)

I remember taking a picture of Lindsey to my hairdresser to try and get my hair cut like hers!

I remember many good times of BYU football games and having good food after the game at our house. Also having cousins be able to come to the 4th of July and watch the fireworks off our deck at our house. It's so nice having close cousins and family and being able to have special memories with them!

Still thinking about the Pioneers!

In sacrament meeting today they were talking about how one of the very first things Brigham Young did when he got to the Salt Lake Valley was find the spot for the temple to be built! It triggered this story of Ulysses S Cline & Lovina Angelia Barrus that I had researched out and made these pages for a "Love Story Book" I put together. These two were at the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple in 1893 and were married in that temple that year! I loved reading that story because I was married 100 years later in that same temple!

24th of July

Pioneer Day was celebrated with Dad, Mom, Dianne, Silvia, Bergren, the Harrison children and myself at Heritage Park. Zoie won the pie eating contest for her age group and received a medal, and Gregory got to be the "dunce" in the pioneer school room demonstration. They have the best ice cream!

"My grandparents on my Father's side were Paul Lauritz Larsson Olson and Kirstina Mattson Neilson. My grandmother passed away before I was born and my grandfather passed away when I was just 3 years old, so I didn't know them very well. Paul was a convert to the church from Sweden. He was a fisherman and fixed our shoes the best he could and was just a handy guy. He had a favorite place to fish. He didn't like the fish much but caught them to make sure his family wouldn't starve. I remember him even though I was only 3 years old." -Melvin Charles Olson Life History.

WELCOME to the FAMILY of Melvin and Wilda

As we had been planning the Summer Family Reunion - Tawnya and I felt "inspired" after spending time up in Afton, Wyoming over the Memorial Day Weekend that we wanted to: get to know, REALLY get to know, connect or re-connect with our cousins! And hence the Cousin Connection Carnival began! After thinking about what we could do to establish a connection - one idea rolled into another and somewhere in the middle of the night I felt like starting a Blog was a good place to start! This blog is private, only those people we invite can read this blog. Also each family will have "author ability" where you can publish a post. A post could be: pictures, events, announcements, family history stories, ect. ect. This would then make is possible to keep up with each others happenings, we could have on going conversations, and thus be "connected"!
